First written in 1987 and originally in Portuguese, The Alchemist, written by Paulo Coelho, is a masterpiece of a book that has gone on to win a million hearts and has remained on every possible best-seller list worldwide since its launch. A simple fable of following one’s dream, The Alchemist has inspired many people into following their hearts calling and overcoming the fear of failure.

The Alchemist is told through the eyes of a Shepherd boy named Santiago who has recurring dreams of buried treasure in the deserts of Egypt. Although afraid at first, the boy soon realizes that these are prophetic messages and decides to undertake a journey that will unravel these questions for him.

Santiago meets many new people during his long and tiring journey and through interaction with each one of them, he learns something new and valuable about the nature of human life and also learns to read the signs that nature shows. Slowly and slowly he begins to understands the ways of the world. After falling in love with a girl called Fatima, he realizes the power of love and its purpose.

Throughout The Alchemist, there is one message that keeps getting repeated and that is that one must always follow one’s dreams and heart for only then will he attain true satisfaction. There is a beautiful saying in the book that if one truly wants something, then the entire universe will come together to make it happen.

It’s all about overcoming that fear because the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. Even if one doesn’t succeed, it does not matter because it is not the goal but the journey towards that goal that really matters.
